While walking around Indianapolis searching for interesting people to photograph I spotted this gentleman on the corner. He too was in search of an interesting person to photograph. Specifically, a fashionable person. While waiting for the crosswalk sign to change I secretly snapped a couple of pics of the well dressed guy propped on the wall scanning his phone before deciding to approach him (the image with the impeding street sign). I often feel more comfortable taking the shot of the suspecting than those who have no idea there is a camera nearby.
I'd really like to get better at actual street photography. You know, the unsuspecting shot where someone looks crazed indulging in a loaded chili cheese dog or the hipster with the handlebar mustache racing by on a single speed bicycle delivering a businessman's lunch.
I just like hearing the story of those I shoot, so when the moment is right, and I'm feeling bold, I strike up a conversation with a stranger. I love street photography and imagining what the photographed person's life or thoughts are like too. I just happen to like knowing the real story because it is often even greater than my own wild imagination. This particular gentleman shared with me he hosts a local sports talk radio show, is a sports anchor for a local TV news affiliate, and is even involved with one of the professional franchises in the area. However, his passion is fashion and he is interested in meeting people on the street whose style intrigues him. Like me, he scans the streets for interesting people and then approaches them for the opportunity to photograph their style. He shared he had just spent a week in London during fashion week, pretty cool. If you have a moment check his work out here: http://www.instagram.com/naptography.
